The Fairbanks Wellness Coalition’s (FWC) purpose is to foster wellness through primary prevention and advocacy. As part of our work, we hope to prevent the use of teen drinking, dispel the stigma of accessing behavioral health assistance and promote responding to signs of suicide among teens (ages 12 to 18) in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. As part of our prevention efforts, the Fairbanks Wellness Coalition is developing positive community norming messages for teens (ages 12 – 18) that combine promoting the positive, hopeful fact that the majority of local teens don’t use alcohol, promoting the importance and acceptability of seeking behavioral health services and promoting addressing signs of suicide.

Sources of Strength

The Sources of Strength Program is an evidence-based program to build protective factors for middle and high school youth against suicide and major risk factors for suicide. This program was specifically identified as a strategy for the Fairbanks Wellness Coalition to reduce suicide in the Fairbanks North Star Borough in teenaged youth.

Youth Media Camp

The Youth Media Camp is a new program that the Fairbanks Wellness Coalition took on starting in FY22. We have included the program with our Fy23 proposals, and we now have the proposals available for those who may be interested.

The Youth Media Camp includes PSA workgroup and marketing training. Our hopes are to form a Youth Task Force and advisory committee which will help the Coalition to enhance capacity and reach target populations through training and messaging. This program advances leadership opportunities for the youth and will be a catalyst for content and messaging driven by youth.
